Room

Since I didn't have to go in to work, I spent the day putting together these wire cube thingys to provide more storage space in my room, and in moving the bed (well, I did that last night)

The cubes and hatboxes in the wire cubey things are all currently empty, but I expect I'll stuff socks and undies and things like that into them. The shoji screen is behind the bed solely because the cat has taken to sharpening her claws on it, so it needs to be protected. The bookshelf to the left needs to be found a new home. I'd really like to get two more shorty bookshelves and put them behind the bed head, to make a sort of headboard with shelves in it, and to get a frame of some sort for the bed to raise it up to provide more storage space udnerneath - ideally I'd like a platform bed, but so far all the ones I've seen in my price range would look stupid with a mattress *and* a box spring on it, and that box spring was way too expensive for me to get rid of it.

ETA: You know, I wonder if I could move the bookshelf thingy (it's one of those that lean against the wall) to behind the bed head and how would it work as a headboard-type thing? I'd have to see if the cat would take to jumping off of it on top of me during the night, though, because that would not be fun.

What sort of frame do you currently have for your bed? The basic metal ones usually aren't too expensive, and you can make them pretty high with bed elevators. I had that setup when I lived in Boston, and the mattress was high enough that I could get my laundry hamper underneath.

There is currently no frame with me bed - it's the box spring and mattress directly on the floor. When I bought them two years ago, I had every plan in the world to shortly thereafter buy a stylish platform frame, but ended up putting the money towards a car instead, plus had that above-mentioned problem of not finding one that wasn't stupid with the box spring.

I would still prefer a stylish platform frame, and ideally I wouldn't have *any* furniture in the room other than the bed, because I pretty much hate furniture other than a bed and a discreet lamp placed in a bedroom - I'd prefer a huge wall of built-ins that look like a wall. :D The wire cubey things are currently a stopgap measure intended to help control clutter.

I am an expert at intending to do things and not actually doing them. I'm actually sleeping on an air mattress these days; I got it for moving and then never got around to buying a real one. And now I keep thinking, "Well, I'll be moving again in less than two years--do I really need to buy a mattress now?"

Because I am not only lazy: I am also cheap. :)

I slept on an air mattress for a year before moving here and buying the mattress - I had a futon, which was great until I hurt my back. And I discovered that blowing up the air mattress I owned and putting it on top of the futon made my back feel much better, so I did that. :D I had no job at the time, so couldn't afford a better bed.

I just put the leaning bookshelf behind the bed instead of the shoji screen - it fits nicely, and I think it'll look good once I load it with stuff. The lamp won't fit on it, though, so currently it and the butler's tray it sits on are crammed next to the bed. I have a floor lamp in the living room that I'm not using in there - maybe I'll move it into the bedroom. But it requires I buy light bulbs first - I have cannibalized all its bulbs for other lamps.

* When it comes to bedrooms, my tastes take a decidedly modern turn, strangely enough.

I like the way the cubes pick up the pattern of the screen.

I love those cubes. I left all mine with my son in Seattle. At the moment I have plenty of closet and cabinet space (and not enough wall space) so I don't need them.
