Sep. 6th, 2011 10:03 amHave got rid of the over six hundred unread message in my inbox, most of them LJ/DW comment notifications (I'd read them; just marked them unread so I'd get back to them...oops), by the simple expedient of archiving them all in Gmail. I am now down to one unread message. If you want/need/await a reply to something, let me know. :)

Sep. 6th, 2011 12:00 pmWe bought a set of four cat shelves - carpeted shelves custom-built to fit a cat, and sturdy enough to hold the weight of at least two cats. I'd looked at various stores for regular shelves, but the weight limits they claimed were ridiculous - 6 pounds, 8 pounds, etc. For our purposes, I wanted them to carry at least 30 pounds, in case two 12-pound cats ended up on the same shelf, and to account for the increase in pressure with one of them landing on it or pushing off when leaping away. These said each platform could hold over 30 pounds, and they came with drywall anchors rated at 97 pounds. Awesome. (eBay - set of 4 | Etsy - individual.)

Soliciting feedback on whether the opacity/translucent stuff works on different browser/OS combos.

Not soliciting feedback on anything else - this is just a test to see if it's even worth doing, and if the opacity breaks on someone's setup, it's not. :)
(FYI, I deliberately picked the background to have a lot of contrasty colors for the purposes of the test; if I go this route, the actual background picture will be more muted.)

While I don't know anyone in the Bastrop area, I've driven through the town many, many times in the past 30+ years (for one, it was the halfway point between home and college), and what the residents are going through right now saddens me.

While I don't know anyone in the Bastrop area, I've driven through the town many, many times in the past 30+ years (for one, it was the halfway point between home and college), and what the residents are going through right now saddens me.
So I bought the Sims 3 on Steam a few days back and started playing. I first created Sims based on me, Toby, and the cats* and played with them for a bit, but later on created Sims for Genghis, Jason, and Beecher from my late unlamented*** webcomic Can't Sleep Con Will Eat Me, and that's been way more fun. For those of you who remember them, Beecher's been striking out with the ladies, Jason's been doing remarkably well with them (i.e., not actively repulsing them), and Genghis has been grumpy and insulting everyone.
They don't have a whole lot of money as I decided the first thing three young men rooming together right out of college would do is blow all available cash on a TV and a sweet stereo system. Beecher's the only one with a full-time job (law enforcement, as I figured his dad would get him a job, plus his ultimate desire is to be a Super Spy and he needs to work his way up through the ranks for that), Jason's working at a bookstore part time, and Genghis is currently a barista at a spa during the afternoons**** while picking up some extra cash hacking overnight.
In this picture, all three of our protagonists got up in the middle of the night to have an argument, precipitated by me not buying a third bed. Genghis and Beecher immediately took the two beds over and Jason shouted at them, went and napped fitfully on the couch, then shouted at them again until they got up to argue back.

I did eventually take pity on Jason and buy him a bed. Which Beecher immediately took over, leaving his old bed for Jason.

* Humans, as SIms Pets isn't out yet. :) I was dressing human Nefer up in stripes to match her namesake's fur and didn't realize how Gothy I was making her. However, she's the only one in the household who has any sense.**
** Toby's Sim set the stove on fire while making mac and cheese, and the rest of us, including two random houseguests, stood around panicking until Nefer got the fire extinguisher and put it out.
